"Little Volcano' Bush Clover, a deciduous shrub variant within the Fabaceae (pea) family, boasts elegantly cascading branches reminiscent of a fountain. The genus Lespedeza pays homage to Vincente Manuel de Cespedes, the Spanish governor of West Florida (1784-1790), while the species thunbergii honors the Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828).
Plant this shrub in full sun with moderately moist soil, ensuring adequate drainage. Its striking pea-like pink blossoms adorn the landscape from late summer through fall, providing a burst of color when other plants may be dormant.
Though it follows a woody life cycle, 'Little Volcano' may die back in harsh winters in colder regions, necessitating pruning to ground level at season's end. As it blooms on new growth, this pruning won't affect the next year's flowers. In areas where it remains evergreen, pruning can occur post-blooming.
